Polytopia is a mobile strategy game with an active online community of competitive players. For the summer of 2021, me and some other community members organised a fun set of competitions themed around the Olympics. I was in charge of designing a website for the event:
The dark colour scheme with neon highlights is intended to reflect the gamer audience, and the red and blue accent colours are taken from the branding of the hosting organisation, Polychampions. The “five tribes” icon mixes the styles of the Polytopia game and the actual Olympics.
I originally designed the site for larger screens, and the navigation menu was one of the bigger challenges to adapt to mobile devices. In the end, I rewrote it entirely to switch to a completely separate menu layout on smaller screens. This menu just fit the content on the smallest screen sizes I was targetting (360 by 640 pixels), but if any more content had been added I would have had to rework the menu again.
To keep the team management page uncluttered, I used minimal icon buttons for actions on team members (making them team leaders or removing them from the team). These icons are not my own work, they are from the Font Awesome icon set.
Compared to the navigation menu, the team management page was a lot easier to make responsive to screen size. This resulted in a more continous experience between platforms. However, there were still changes to be made - the horizontal space could not be afforded for the extra background layer, and this lead to a lack of separation between different elements. I added the extra coloured bars seen here to compensate for this.
I was especially happy with how polished this page felt, although it did not end up being used much. On most pages the title was put directly on the site background, but I find the “bubble” effect of this layout quite visually appealing and intuitive.
The event was a huge success, with thousands of signups and over fifty participating teams. Prizes were sponsored by Midjiwan, the developer of Polytopia, and the event recieved in-game advertisement. The website is currently still available, though it may be repurposed in the future since the event has ended.
